An Act To Remove the High School Physical Education Credit Requirement

1 BE IT ENACTED BY THE TENNESSEE YMCA YOUTH LEGISLATURE:

3 Section 1: Terms in this act shall be defined as follows:
4 A)Reproductive education: The teaching of structures and functions of the reproductive system as
5 they relate to the human life cycle, reproductive health, and contraceptives.
6 B)Functional Strength training: Exercises that focus on the muscles needed for basic everyday
7 actions, like squatting, bending, reaching, and twisting.

9 Section 2: A half credit of Physical Education will not be required to graduate high school in the
10 state of Tennessee.

12 Section 3: A full credit of health courses will be required.

14 Section 4: The High School health course will be split into two sections: Health course A and
15 Health course B.

17 Section 5: Health course A will cover healthy meal planning and cooking, creating a workout
18 routine for specific goals, functional strength training, avoiding injury during physical activity, and
19 creating a positive relationship with exercise.

21 Section 6: Health course B will cover first aid, personal safety, reproductive education, substance
22 use and abuse, and mental health.

24 Section 7: The selected textbooks for this course will be the Glencoe Health and Human Sexuality
25 and Functional Strength Training for Physical Education by Human Kinetics. Other materials may
26 be used upon approval by each district.

28 Section 8: A physical education course will still be offered as an elective for students.

30 Section 9: This Physical education elective will follow the requirements currently planned by the
31 State of Tennessee.

33 Section 10: This law shall take effect July 1, 2024.

35 Section 11: The high school class of 2025 will be waived from this requirement.

37 Section 12: Any laws or parts of laws in conflict with this are hereby repealed.
