1 | BE IT ENACTED BY THE TENNESSEE YMCA YOUTH IN GOVERNMENT |

3 | Section 1: Terms in this act will be defined as follows: |
4 | a. School Days - refers to any day or part of a day when students are expected to be in |
5 | attendance at school and days when teachers go to school for professional development or do in- |
6 | service training |
7 | b. High School - is a secondary school that typically includes grades 9 or 10 through 12 |
8 | c. Public School (including magnet school) - tax-supported school operated by a local |
9 | governmental authority. It provides free education for the children of a community or district and |
10 | is part of the system of public education, including both primary and secondary schools |
11 | d. School Hours - the minimum requirements for a school day in high school (9th through 12th |
12 | grade) is 6.5 hours |

14 | Section 2: Currently in Tennessee, the compulsory school attendance law requires that students |
15 | attend school for 180 days for five consecutive week days. |

17 | Section 3: This act changes the compulsory school attendance to 170 days and mandates public |
18 | high schools to have a four day school week instead of five. |

20 | Section 4: Under the act, the county's school board of education is able to determine what day of |
21 | the week there is no school. |

23 | Section 5: The amount of school days will be cut to 170 days, this will take some days out of |
24 | summer break. |

26 | Section 6: Under this act teachers, despite working only ten less days, should still have the same |
27 | salary they would get if they worked for one hundred eighty days. |

29 | Section 7: This act should not require funding from the state budget but each county’s school |
30 | board of education may require some money. |

32 | Section 8: All laws or parts of laws in conflict with this are hereby repealed. |

34 | Section 9: This act shall take effect in the 2024-2025 school year. |
