An Act to Reduce the Sentence for Vehicular Homicide

1 BE IT ENACTED BY THE TENNESSEE YMCA YOUTH IN GOVERNMENT

3 Section 1: Terms in this act will be defined as follows:
4 Vehicular homicide: The reckless unintentional killing of another by the operation of an
5 automobile, airplane, motorboat or other motor vehicle, penalized by a Class B or C felony.
6 Class C Felony: A felony such as aggravated assault, kidnapping, and robbery that carries possible
7 sentences of 3 to 15 years in prison with fines up to $10,000.
8 Class D Felony: A felony such as extortion, reckless homicide, and possession of marijuana that
9 carries possible sentences of 2 to 12 years in prison with fines up to $5,000.

11 Section 2: This act will reduce the sentence for non-impaired vehicular homicide by lowering the
12 classification from a Class C Felony to a Class D Felony with a maximum of 8 years in prison.

14 Section 3: This act will have no effect on the current sentence for impaired vehicular homicide,
15 which is classified as a Class B Felony.

17 Section 4: This act will have no effect on the current sentence should a death incur from drag or
18 street racing.

20 Section 5: All laws or parts of laws in conflict with this are hereby repealed.

22 Section 7: This act shall take effect June 1st, 2024.
