| Section 1: Terms used in this act should be defined as follows: |
| a. Insulin- Natural occurring hormone, helps the body turn food into energy and manages blood |
| sugar levels. Having diabetes, your body can not make enough insulin or can’t use it properly. If |
| your pancreas doesn’t make enough insulin or your body doesn’t use insulin properly, it leads to |
| high blood sugar levels (hyperglycemia). This results in diabetes. |
| b. Insulin medicine: Human insulin is used to control blood sugar in people who have type 1 |
| diabetes or in people who have type 2 diabetes. Insulin medicine is used to take the place of |
| insulin that is normally produced by the body. It works by helping move sugar from the blood into |
| other body tissues where it is used for energy. It also stops the liver from producing more sugar. |
| The types of insulin differ only in how quickly they begin to work and how long they continue to |
| control blood sugar. |
| c. Type 1 Diabetes: Condition in which the body does not make insulin and therefore cannot |
| control the amount of sugar in the blood. Usually passed on genetically. |
| d.Type 2 Diabetes: The pancreas makes more insulin to try to get cells to respond, eventually the |
| pancreas can’t keep up, and blood sugar rises, setting the stage for prediabetes and type 2 |
| diabetes. Type 2 isn’t genetic and it usually appears because of excessive weight. |
| |
| Section 2): This bill will cap the cost of insulin and will lead to saving more lives/ lower the |
| expense of diabetics care. Therefore minimizing devastating complications from diabetes and |
| removing another worry from the health system. |
| |
| Section 3): Make insulin more affordable for patients who are not easily accessible to the price. |
| |
| Section 4): Patients are able to pay a cap of $35 for a monthly supply. |
| |
| Section 5): This act will not require funding from the state. |
| |
| Section 6): All laws and parts of laws in conflict with this act are hereby repealed. |
