AN ACT TO LIMIT THE PRESCRIBING OF OZEMPIC FOR INDIVIDUALS WITHOUT TYPE II DIABETES

1 BE IT ENACTED BY THE TENNESSEE YMCA YOUTH IN GOVERNMENT

3 Section 1: Terms in this act, unless the context requires otherwise, shall be defined as follows:
4 Ozempic: Ozempic is a weekly injection that helps lower blood sugar by helping the pancreas
5 make more insulin. It is not approved for weight loss, but some physicians prescribe it to be used
6 for weight loss.
7 Type II Diabetes: With type 2 diabetes, your body doesn’t use and produce insulin well and can’t
8 keep blood sugar at normal levels.
9 Weight Loss: Weight loss is a decrease in body weight resulting from either voluntary (diet,
10 exercise) or involuntary (illness) circumstances
11 Class A misdemeanor: possession of a prescribed medication that does not belong to you or giving
12 someone a prescription drug that does not belong to them. A Class A misdemeanor can result in a
13 fine of up to $2,500 and a year behind bars.

15 Section 2:
16 All individuals or entities that have the ability to prescribe ozempic must only prescribe the drug
17 for individuals with type 2 diabetes.
18 If a individual or entity posses or prescribes ozempic for an individual they will be charged with
19 Class A Misdemeanor

21 Section 3:
22 The following bill will enhance funds towards TennCare. The money raised from the fines will be
23 reimbursed through Tennessee Healthcare. This bill will not cost the state anything.

25 Section 4: All laws or parts of laws in conflict with this are hereby repealed.

27 Section 5: This act shall take effect January 1st, 2024, the public welfare requiring it.
